Graffiti is an art form created by individuals in public spaces, often without permission. There is a wide range of graffiti in our world today. Sometimes it is as simple as a scribbled word or drawing, sometimes it is as elaborate as large multicolored murals. It is used as a form of self-expression whether it is to leave your mark on a territory, share an opinion, or even just create for the joy of artistic expression.

I wanted to experiment with the weight of words that hold encouragement to promote positivity in the life of the viewer. They are not meant to hold the weight of society or provide insight into a particular moment, but I hope to discover if these joyful, lighthearted messages are impactful on their own— without the addition of politics, culture, or any group affiliation. To play on this idea of something intangible, like words, having a physical weight or presence, I created my paintings on a lightweight insulation foam. This allows the works to pop off of the surfaces and take up a new space when they are displayed. It also allows them to easily be held and carried like signs.
